Varicose Veins and Spider Veins in Women

Having varicose veins can cause self-esteem issues for men and women. It causes one to have enlarged and twisted veins in the lower legs. There are a number of reasons why some people have it. It could be heightened due to age and gender because women are more prone, age, pregnancy, genetic factors and lifestyle.

What causes varicose veins?

Poor posture is one of the main reasons why people suffer from varicose veins. Too much weight can also hinder the proper function of the circulatory system, it causes it to work harder which then leads to the pressure in the leg veins.

Another reason is when people keep their legs crossed. Crossing the legs can slow down the upward flow of the blood back to the heart which causes the pressure on the leg veins as well. Lack of exercise and prolonged period of standing can also cause varicose veins. This mostly affects bank tellers, nurses, grocery clerks and other jobs that require people to stand for long periods of time.

Tight clothing can also constrict the waist, groin and legs and wearing high heels frequently constrict the blood. It can also be caused by weak or damaged valves in the veins; this problem is called venous insufficiency. Spider veins on the other hand can be a result of hormone changes and constant exposure to the sun and injuries.

Pregnant women can also suffer from varicose veins due to the pressure coming from the uterus. They would usually improve after 3 months of delivery. Varicose veins can be accompanied by aching pain, throbbing and cramping, swelling, rash, darkening of the skin and restless legs.

Spider veins do not really pose a huge threat on health. However, the itching and burning felt on the legs can be very irritating. Varicose veins on the other hand can lead to sores or skin ulcers as well as bleeding because the veins are easily injured.

It would be best to relax the feet. Do not wash it immediately after a long and tiring day. Let is relax and elevate it using a pillow during sleep to improve blood flow for a few minutes.
